Shape the Future of Transport in the Southwest – Join AECOM as a Highways & Traffic Engineer in Bristol

Are you ready to make a tangible impact on the streets and communities of the Southwest? AECOM's Bristol-based Streets team is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Engineer to help design and deliver innovative traffic engineering and urban realm projects. From concept development through to construction, you'll contribute to schemes that create safer, more sustainable, and people-friendly transport networks.

As part of a collaborative and multidisciplinary team, you'll support the delivery of projects for clients such as the West of England Combined Authority, Bath & North East Somerset Council, Cardiff Council and Wessex Water, while contributing to major frameworks including WECA PSF2 and SEWTAPS. Whether it's delivering active travel schemes, improving cycling infrastructure, calming traffic in busy neighbourhoods, or enhancing public spaces, your work will directly improve how people move and live.

Working alongside experienced Senior Engineers and Project Managers, you'll develop your technical skills, gain valuable project experience, and build the foundations of a rewarding career in transport infrastructure and street design.

Here's what you'll do:

As an Engineer in our Bristol Streets team, you'll be involved in the full project lifecycle—from feasibility through to detailed design and delivery. You'll work on a diverse portfolio of traffic engineering, local transport and urban realm schemes while developing your technical expertise within a supportive team environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the development of feasibility, preliminary and detailed designs for traffic engineering, streetscape and local highway schemes.
  • Prepare high-quality technical outputs including drawings, reports and specifications.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, regulations and client requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineers, planners and technicians across AECOM's business lines.
  • Deliver assigned tasks to agreed timescales, budgets and quality standards.
  • Promote and apply Health & Safety best practice, including CDM principles.
  • Support site visits, surveys and project meetings where required.
  • Provide regular updates to the Senior Engineer or Project Manager on project progress.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical documentation and project deliverables.
  • Participate in training and development activities to build technical and professional knowledge.

What We're Looking For:

We're seeking an enthusiastic and proactive engineer with a passion for creating safer, more sustainable streets and public spaces. Whether you're joining us straight from university or bringing some early-career experience, you'll be eager to learn, develop your technical skills and grow your career within a supportive and collaborative team.

What we offer:

  • Flexible hybrid working to ensure a work-life balance that suits your lifestyle.
  • Professional development support and mentorship schemes.
  • Career development opportunities via AECOM University and technical practice networks.
  • A range of core and personalised benefits tailored to your lifestyle and well-being, customized to fit your lifestyle.
  • Volunteering days – 2 days per year to volunteer in STEM or charitable initiatives.
  • Wellbeing Events – yoga sessions, wellness weeks, lunchtime walks and mental health awareness activities.
  • Sports & Social Club – monthly office-wide social activities plus Streets team events
  • Annual Celebrations – summer events, holiday celebrations, and recognition awards.

If you're looking for a place where your ambition meets endless possibility, AECOM is where your next big leap begins.

Qualifications

Ready to push the limits of what's possible? Here's what we're looking for:

  • Experience in developing feasibility, preliminary, and detailed designs for local roads and traffic schemes.
  • Familiarity with design elements such as alignment, drainage, pavements, road restraint systems, signage, and markings.
  • Knowledge of cycling infrastructure, traffic calming, junction design, and footway/carriageway improvements.
  • Understanding of relevant design standards including TSRGD, Manual for Streets, DMRB, and the Traffic Signs Manual.
  • Awareness of Health & Safety and CDM regulations.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
