Summary

An independent building services consultancy is looking for a Senior or Principal Electrical Building Services Design Engineer to join its growing team in Bristol. This is an opportunity to work on a varied portfolio of projects across multiple sectors, take a leading role in electrical design delivery, and support the development of junior engineers.

The role would suit an experienced electrical engineer looking to take on greater technical responsibility, lead projects and contribute to the continued growth of an established consultancy.

The Company

The business is an independent mechanical and electrical building services consultancy with offices in Bristol and Cardiff, delivering projects across the UK.

Providing building services design and coordination from initial concept through to project completion, the consultancy works across commercial, leisure, residential, retail, healthcare, education, industrial and infrastructure sectors.

With an established team of Chartered Engineers, engineers and technicians, the business delivers complex multidisciplinary projects alongside smaller-scale refurbishment and new-build schemes.

The company is continuing to grow and is committed to investing in its employees through training, mentoring and opportunities for career progression.

The Role

As a Senior or Principal Electrical Building Services Design Engineer, you will report to the Director and take responsibility for delivering electrical design work across a varied portfolio of projects.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Leading and delivering electrical building services designs from initial concept through to completion.
  • Producing and coordinating electrical drawings, specifications, technical documents and calculations.
  • Designing electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, standby generation, UPS, earthing and bonding.
  • Managing client relationships and liaising with architects, consultants, contractors and other project stakeholders.
  • Providing technical leadership and overseeing the quality of electrical design deliverables.
  • Managing project teams, coordinating multidisciplinary design work and ensuring deliverables meet agreed programmes and budgets.
  • Undertaking feasibility studies, site surveys, design cost estimates and technical reporting.
  • Reviewing designs to ensure compliance with relevant standards, regulations and contractual requirements.
  • Assessing CDM risks and supporting the management of design hazards.
  • Mentoring junior engineers and supporting their technical and professional development.
  • Contributing to business development, bid preparation and the continued growth of the electrical engineering team.
  • Identifying innovative design solutions and supporting energy efficiency and sustainable, low-carbon engineering initiatives.
The Person

The successful candidate will have a strong background in electrical building services design, alongside the technical ability and communication skills to deliver projects and work effectively with clients and multidisciplinary teams.

You will ideally have:
  • Experience in electrical building services design within a consultancy or similar engineering environment.
  • A degree, HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience designing electrical systems, including LV distribution, lighting, electrical load assessments, cable selection and protection.
  • Good working knowledge of the 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations and relevant electrical standards.
  • Experience using electrical design and calculation software such as Amtech, ElectricalOM, DIALux, Relux, Hevacomp, AutoCAD, Revit or similar packages.
  • An understanding of RIBA and BSRIA work stages, project management processes and CDM requirements.
  • Experience coordinating designs with other engineering disciplines and project stakeholders.
  • Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to manage workloads, meet project deadlines and provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
  • Commercial awareness and an interest in supporting business development.
  • An interest in sustainable design, energy reduction and emerging engineering technologies.

Membership of a relevant professional institution, such as the IET or CIBSE, is preferred. Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, or working towards professional registration, would also be beneficial.

Candidates should have the right to work in the UK, a full UK driving licence and good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and Excel.

Benefits
  • Contributory pension scheme with a 6% contribution.
  • Minimum 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays.
  • Flexible working hours, with core hours of 10am to 4pm.
  • Hybrid working from the Bristol office.
  • Cycle to Work scheme.
  • Payment for membership of up to two professional institutions.
  • One volunteering day per year.
  • Casual dress code and a relaxed working environment.
  • Ongoing training, mentoring and opportunities for career progression.
