About the Opportunity:
This senior-level role supports the Civil Engineering division responsible for the replication design strategy transitioning from Hinkley Point C (HPC) to Sizewell C (SZC). Operating under the nuclear island design framework, the Level 3 Civil Engineer will act as a Technical Lead for the main civil contract (SZ2201), assisting the Civil Engineering Lead (CEL) across both Pre-SOC and Post-SOC delivery phases.
You will play a pivotal technical and contractual leadership role-overseeing technical specifications, conducting engineering surveillance, managing contractor technical queries (TQs), and ensuring civil design deliverables meet strict UK nuclear standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership & Civil Design Support
Design & Technical Oversight: Provide expert technical support on building-specific civil engineering topics, requiring deep knowledge of civil design. Produce key deliverables, review internal/external technical documents, and lead technical alignment meetings.
Specification Review & Surveillance: Assist the Civil Engineering Lead (CEL) with technical specification reviews and establish comprehensive technical surveillance programmes, including annual surveillance reporting.
Lessons Learnt: Drive continuous improvement by embedding lessons learnt from HPC and previous nuclear projects into SZ2201 contract activities.
Contract Management & Stakeholder Interface
Contractor Compliance: Ensure all technical specifications and standards are strictly adhered to by the contract holder.
Technical Queries (TQs): Lead the resolution of complex technical queries, design changes, and contractual clarifications submitted by contractors.
Tool & Process Development: Develop and refine contract management tools to optimize technical surveillance and project workflow efficiency.
Client & Entity Liaison: Act as the primary technical bridge, liaising across various client entities, delivery teams, and external stakeholders.
Candidate Profile:
Experience & Level
Experience Range: Minimum 10 years of post-graduate experience in civil design engineering within complex, heavy civil or regulated infrastructure projects.
Nuclear Industry Exposure: Experience within the nuclear sector (particularly familiarity with UK nuclear project design sequences or HPC civil scopes) is highly desirable.
Qualifications & Technical Knowledge
Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
Codes & Standards: Strong knowledge and understanding of civil engineering structures, CW codes/standards, and soil geotechnics studies.
Health & Safety: Comprehensive understanding of relevant UK Health & Safety regulations (e.g., HSWA 1974, CDM 2015).
Key Competencies
Technical Leadership: Ability to manage contractor technical surveillance, resolve complex civil engineering challenges, and guide junior technical teams.
Contractual Acumen: Skilled in leading contractual discussions, handling technical queries, and ensuring compliance from Tier 1 contractors.
