Training Consultant - DSAT x 5

12 month contracts

£60-70 per hour (Inside IR35)

Mostly remote, some on site visits required.

Our UK defence client is seeking up to 5 x DSAT Training Specialists to join their Training and Development team.

As a DSAT Training Specialist, you will play a key role in ensuring that training solutions are designed, developed, delivered and assured in accordance with JSP 822 - Defence Direction and Guidance for Training and Education, supporting the delivery of safe, effective and operationally relevant training across the Submarines enterprise.

You will work closely with subject matter experts, operational stakeholders, training designers, instructors and assurance teams to identify training requirements and translate them into robust, evidence-based training solutions.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong understanding of Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT) who wants to contribute to the development of the people and capabilities supporting the UK's submarine enterprise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply the DSAT methodology and JSP 822 principles across the training design and development lifecycle.
  • Conduct and support training needs analysis, identifying performance requirements, training gaps and appropriate learning interventions.
  • Develop and maintain training requirements, specifications and associated training documentation.
  • Work with Subject Matter Experts to identify learning objectives, performance statements and assessment requirements.
  • Design training solutions that are learner-focused, measurable, proportionate and aligned to operational requirements.
  • Support the development of training and assessment strategies, including appropriate formative and summative assessment methods.
  • Ensure training products are developed, reviewed and assured in accordance with applicable Defence standards, governance and quality requirements.
  • Provide DSAT advice and guidance to project teams, operational stakeholders and training delivery teams.
  • Support training validation and evaluation activities, using evidence and feedback to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Maintain appropriate training records, documentation and audit trails.
  • Contribute to training assurance activities and support internal and external reviews where required.
  • Identify risks, dependencies and opportunities associated with training delivery and escalate these appropriately.
  • Build effective working relationships across engineering, operations, safety, training and programme functions.

About You

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

Essential

  • Strong practical knowledge and experience of JSP 822 and the Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT).
  • Experience of applying DSAT principles to the analysis, design, development, delivery and evaluation of training.
  • Experience conducting Training Needs Analysis (TNA) and developing training requirements.
  • Knowledge of instructional design and adult learning principles.
  • Experience developing learning objectives, training specifications and assessment strategies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • The ability to analyse complex information and translate it into clear, structured training requirements.
  • A proactive approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.

Desirable

  • Experience within the Royal Navy, Ministry of Defence or wider UK Defence environment.
  • Experience working within a safety-critical or highly regulated engineering environment.
  • Knowledge of submarine, maritime, engineering or nuclear-related training environments.
  • Experience with training assurance, validation and evaluation.
  • Relevant training, learning and development or instructional design qualification.
  • Experience working with Learning Management Systems and digital learning technologies.
  • Knowledge of relevant Defence training policy, standards and assurance processes beyond JSP 822.
