Overview

We are working with a global engineering consultancy to find a Senior Cost Manager based in Bristol. This role offers a salary of up to £65k and utilises a hybrid work model. While the role is focused on Cost Management, the client is open to receiving applications from candidates with a solid Quantity Surveying background who are keen to pivot into specialised cost management.

As they continue to grow, they are looking for a Senior Cost Manager with proven experience, notably in the Energy and Infrastructure sectors, to join their Cost Management Team within their Wales & West Region Project Controls Practice.

This role provides the opportunity to support team management, business growth, and engage with internal and external partners across the entire business.


Your role

Reporting to the Cost Management Lead, you will be responsible for building long-term, sustainable relationships with both members of the internal team and the wider client base.

You will involve delivering work for both existing and new clients to ensure technical service offerings are kept to the highest standard, whilst maintaining a strong team-working ethos in accordance with the firm’s digital aspirations.

You will play an integral part in delivering the business plan for this rapidly expanding team and support in driving success in the Wales & West Region. You will innovate and foster a collaborative, professional, and positive working environment while delivering your core cost management responsibilities.


About you
  • Support the Cost Management capability, including development and use of Power-BI, PRISM, Oracle, Deltek, Ecosys, and other relevant software.
  • You must be ambitious with a thirst for innovation and growth.
  • Engage the community of practice and support technical excellence, service innovation, and the development of benchmarking capabilities.
  • Unlock talent and develop the next generation of leaders.
  • Deliver excellent client service on commissions through quality assurance and regular client care.
  • Support and manage teams on project/technical delivery.
  • Technical expertise in Cost Management services across complex infrastructure.
  • A good understanding of industry benchmarks, Cost and Work Breakdown Structures, and methods of measurement (e.g., RMM, NRM, etc.).
  • Good network within the energy and/or infrastructure sectors.
  • Management skills necessary to advise project teams appropriately.
  • Evidence of service innovation, technical excellence, and exceptional service delivery.
  • Proven technical skills to monitor, analyze, and control cost performance against set targets.
  • Technical ability to challenge engineering teams and identify cost-efficient solutions.
  • Collaborative behaviors and technical expertise to interface with wider project controls, including schedule logic and risk exposure.
  • Awareness of industry challenges and opportunities.
  • Commercial, quantity surveying, and/or finance skills, with full working knowledge of the construction industry and understanding of Standard Forms of Contract (NEC/FIDIC/IChemE).
  • Ability to develop and understand performance measurement using Earned Value Management (EVM) and similar techniques.
  • Major project/programme work experience.

  • Deliver an exceptional cost management service for multiple stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities for strategic recruitment and investment.
  • Ensure appropriate engagement across the wider business.
  • Promote a positive team ethos and support team development.
  • Monitor progress against targets, identify risks, and provide solutions.

Business Development

  • Support Cost Management business development.
  • Opportunity to support Key Account Management activities.
  • Monitor and manage activity and expenditure within your remit.
  • Support your Cost Lead with high-quality business material.
  • Actively engage with internal business processes.
  • Support key accounts to maximize impact.

Project Leadership

  • Responsibility for delivering portfolios and projects under minimum supervision.
  • Act as an ambassador for the firm and your professional institution.
  • Provide guidance and technical advice to stakeholders and chair meetings.
  • Competence in project commercial accountability.

Technical Leadership

  • Actively broaden experience and expertise.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legal and technical matters.
  • Participate in relevant training initiatives.
  • Apply concepts of quality assurance and environmental management.
  • Manage client relationships and service delivery.

Team Building

  • Grow service and sector-focussed teams.
  • Actively engage within a project delivery environment.
  • Mentor and develop Assistant Cost Managers and Cost Managers.
Attributes
  • Proven track record in supervising projects for or on behalf of complex projects clients.
  • Proven track record within a consultancy environment, managing teams.
  • Degree qualified in a construction or finance-related field. Preferably with RICS, ICE, AACE, CaSA, or similar.
  • Relevant industry experience in cost-oriented roles.
