Salary: £29,450 (Grade 3) per year (plus Inner London Weighting of £3,483.94, if eligible)
Length of contract: Permanent

Who are Women’s Aid?

Women’s Aid is the national charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children. We are a federation of just under 180 organisations which provide over 300 local lifesaving services to women and children across England. For 50 years we have campaigned on behalf of our members and survivors to shape policy and practice, and to raise awareness of domestic abuse.

Our support services, which include the Survivors’ Forum, the No Woman Turned Away Project, the Survivor’s Handbook, Love Respect (our dedicated website for young people), the national Women’s Aid Directory and our advocacy projects, help thousands of women and children every year.

Purpose of the Research and Data Officer role:

As the Research and Data Officer, the successful candidate will play an integral role in the promotion and upkeep of the Routes to Support database of information on local violence against women and girls (VAWG) services and refuge vacancies, and to support with the analysis. This role will support with data collection, analysis and use of data to inform policy and practice, and support with research work within Women’s Aid.

Key duties and responsibilities of the Research and Data Officer:

  • To be responsible for the promotion and upkeep of the Routes to Support database of information on local violence against women and girls (VAWG) services and refuge vacancies.
  • Respond to enquiries about Routes to Support and the UK Gold Book, co-ordinate subscriptions and provide support to users.
  • Research and identify services eligible for inclusion in Routes to Support; assess applications and make recommendations for approval; and carry out all associated tasks to add services to the directory.
  • Participate in promotion of the Routes to Support project including providing content for communications, ensuring web copy is up to date and assisting with other activities promoting Routes to Support
  • Identify potential system development to improve data collection systems and user experience on Routes to Support; and support the Senior Research & Evaluation Officer and Research & Evidence Manager to make recommendations on development work to the Routes to Support Steering Group.
  • Support with work of the Routes to Support Steering Group including arranging meetings, taking minutes and conducting the annual user evaluation. Keep clear records on any costs for Steering Group meeting arrangements, ensuring any spending on this activity achieves good value and can be accounted for.
  • Support with data collection, analysis and use of data to inform policy and practice.
  • Ensure that service information on Routes to Support is kept updated and accurate, liaising with local VAWG services and collecting data as required, monitoring changes to identify trends in service provision.
  • Work with the Senior Research and Evaluation Officer and Research & Evidence Manager to analyse, report on and disseminate data from Routes to Support, including responding to queries and contributing to reports.
  • Co-ordinate Freedom of Information Requests to local authorities, including disseminating the request, collating responses, data analysis and dissemination of the findings.
  • Support with other data collection, analysis and dissemination work as required.
  • To support with the use and dissemination of findings from Women’s Aid research work via different communication methods as required, including writing of briefings and reports and delivering presentations.

What we are looking for in our Research and Data Officer:

  • A non-judgmental approach to survivors of domestic and sexual abuse and a clear understanding of the gendered nature of violence against women and girls..
  • Advanced ability to use excel including use of formulae and pivot tables and accurate data-entry skills.
  • Ability to work with sensitive confidential information and ensure the continued confidentiality of such data and review complex information and identify the implications for women and children affected by gender-based violence and services supporting them
