Job Summary

The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Our work is of unparalleled strategic importance nationally and internationally, ensuring the security of the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent (CASD), and delivering some of the most technically complex programmes in defence. At least one of four nuclear-armed submarines, supported by smaller attack submarines, is on patrol at all times: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Job Description

The NATG Deputy Head for Platform Systems is responsible for the delivery of effective safety certification of the Evacuation/Escape/Rescue; propulsion and manoeuvring; fire protection; and navigation systems of MOD’s ships, submarines and boats. It is also responsible for the delivery of materials science advice, guidance and support to the SDA and DE&S maritime divisions, lead for the development of certification of autonomous systems and the interface with the certification of the aviation aspects of MOD ships currently delivered by the DSA. The post provide senior experiential support to the Naval Authority in the operation of Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary shipping focussed on the marine systems embodied.

Person specification

Candidates Will Be Required To Have

  • A solid understanding of and experience in operating MOD safety management arrangements
  • Experience of the operation of MOD shipping such as: a ship’s senior engineer; in service project team or equipment team engineering leadership; or waterfront support engineering leadership
  • Working knowledge of surface ship marine systems
  • Understanding of the MOD’s and statutory ship regulation requirements
  • Understanding/experience of Classification Society rules and ways of working

Essential Skills

  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent relevant professional registration
  • Member of a relevant Professional Engineering / Science Institute or equivalent body.
  • Relevant Level 6 (or higher) qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of providing technical advice at a senior level and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes in multidisciplinary projects.
  • A broad knowledge of the interconnectedness of systems and an understanding of management of risk across the platform. They will often need to understand supply chain, infrastructure and other factors beyond the obvious responsibilities of the role.

At the SDA, we champion flexible ways of working. Regular in-person attendance (this is expected to be a minimum of 60% depending on business needs) to promote the benefits of face-to-face collaboration alongside flexibility of hours to support work-life balance. Initially, you may be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourselves with the site, the team, and your role.

The post does not offer relocation expenses.

External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
