Job Overview
This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated, and registered healthcare professional to work within the clinical skills team to support a diverse range of staff to develop and maintain a range of evidence based clinical skills which support high quality patient care.
The clinical skills team support NBT clinical staff, and staff from wider organisations, to develop and maintain safe and effective clinical skills which support timely and safe patient care. The clinical skills team provide a variety of training to patient facing staff in planned classroom sessions, within competency and sign off events and to support staff with sign off and practice within clinical areas.
The Clinical Skills Trainer will be supported to develop their confidence and knowledge in delivering a variety of clinical skills training sessions to both registered and unregistered healthcare professions, helping them to develop and maintain the skills and knowledge required to deliver high quality, evidence based and safe clinical skills as part of patient care.
Main duties of the job
The clinical Skills Trainer will be an integral part of the clinical skills team within our Learning and Development Department. The clinical skills trainer will facilitate face to face training sessions with learners, supporting them to develop and maintain a range of safe and effective clinical skills. The trainer will provide constructive feedback and identify areas for learner improvement with an ability to ask for support from more senior members of the team as needed.
The clinical skills trainer will support in the organisation, booking and set up of a range of clinical skills sessions to meet the diverse learning needs of staff within the organisation and from partner and external organisations.
The trainer will be one of the first points of contact for learner queries and will be able to respond to emails and telephone enquiries providing information, signposting and answering questions - with more senior staff available for complex queries if needed.

Our clinical skills team is a small and friendly team based in the L&R centre at Southmead Hospital but also providing training within clinical area, training rooms within the main Brunel building and support for UHBW training sessions on occasions. - Help promote excellent clinical care standards and ensure patients are treated with dignity and respect at all times.
- Maintain and develop a variety of clinical skills to support staff development with the goal of supporting high quality patient care.
- Maintain effective communication with learners, members of the multi-disciplinary team and with patients and visitors when working within clinical areas.
- Obtain informed consent or comply with the principles of the mental capacity act/best interest processes or the mental health act prior to giving care in accordance with Trust policy and to ensure that these processes are highlighted (where applicable) within training.
- Maintain clear concise records and documentation adhering to national standards and trust policies.
- Work clinically to maintain skills and credibility across six shifts per annum (pro rata) and additionally when the hospital is managing periods of clinical escalation where the post holder may be asked to support clinical areas to support safe patient care.
- Provide care and training in accordance with infection prevention and control and health & safety policies.
- Demonstrate an ability to facilitate training sessions after a period of support and supervision.
- To deliver a variety of clinical skills training sessions to an audience of clinical staff, including both registered and unregistered staff from NBT and external organisations.
- Take an active role, as part of the wider team, in the review of online teaching materials, ensuring that these remain appropriate and updated in line with research, policy, and evidence.
- Schedule and organise of clinical skills sessions, including planning dates, and times, and booking training rooms.
- Working alongside the clinical skills lead, clinical skills team facilitator and deputy head of clinical education to review waiting lists for training sessions and booking in additional sessions to meet staff demand.
- Ensure clinical rooms and training areas are prepared, setting up these spaces for training sessions as required.
- Ensure training is delivered in a standardised way in accordance with local and national policy.
- Provide structured and balanced feedback to learners attending training sessions, including providing constructive feedback on areas where improvement is required. Working alongside individuals and their line managers to support a plan for development and learning when learners do not achieve – this may require escalation to a clinical skills facilitator or lead in complex circumstances for advice and support.
- Support the (minimum) annual review of all sessions to ensure that these continue to meet the learning needs of attendees and that these remain up-to-date and evidence based.
- Support in the identification of equipment store needs and support stock items maintenance.
- Work as part of the team to ensure that equipment is well maintained and take appropriate action to escalate/report faulty, missing or broken equipment.
- Identify potential for risk, reducing this where possible and liaising further with the clinical skills team facilitator and lead.
- Work in accordance with your code of professional conduct and within scope of practice.
- Adhere to standards of practice of other relevant agencies both nationally and locally in your professional practice and when providing training.
- Promote a positive learning environment.
- Support learners with further development in the clinical practice environment where needed to support the safe development of clinical skills.
- Provide structured and motivating feedback to learners undertaking training.
- Develop or maintain skills relating to the deteriorating patient.
- Actively demonstrate and promote evidence-based practice and participate within audit.
- Access Trust policies / procedures and comply with those relevant to role. Ensure all appropriate policies are included within training sessions and training materials with accurate reference to these.
- Act in a manner which demonstrates trust values and respect for privacy, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.
- Work flexibly across learning, education and development services to support training and development provision which will include supporting training outside of the clinical skills portfolio.
- Exhibit professional behaviours and attitudes which demonstrate excellent customer care skills and ensure actions support equality and diversity.
- Act within limits of competency and ensure actions support excellent patient care and ensure the wellbeing of patients, staff and others.
- Maintain responsibility for the identification of own continuing educational development needs, including audits of own work practice. Maintain a professional portfolio and participate in clinical supervision as required.
- Support the audit and feedback processes within the clinical skills team.
- Support staff compliance with infection control policy, protocols, and guidance within areas of responsibility.
- Challenge suboptimal practice through appropriate channels, with support when needed.
- Work flexibly as part of the clinical skills team to respond to clinical skills training needs arising from clinical incidents and near misses at a trust wide level under the direction of senior staff.
- Provide update reports on activity and contribute to the annual clinical skills training plan.
- Collaborate with the wider clinical skills team and with subject matter experts to support the review of training.
- Use IT systems for data collection, staff records and to maintain course records including course booking.
- Utilise finite resources with consideration of their cost.
- Participate in team and departmental meetings as requested.
- Participate in the induction and orientation of newly appointed staff, learners, or other visitors.
- Participate in keeping training records using computerised systems and documentation.
- Participate in clinical skills departmental projects.
- Answer clinical skills queries via telephone or shared clinical skills email inbox, escalating to the clinical skills lead for advice where necessary.

- Application form written in a good standard of English (minimal/no errors, punctuation present)

- NMC or HCPC current registration
- Degree in healthcare subject or equivalent
- Evidence of CPD

- Current or recent (within last 12 months) experience of working in an adult healthcare environment at band 5 or equivalent
- Experience of teaching and providing support and feedback (including to students in practice)
- Willingness to work towards a teaching and assessing or mentorship qualification
- Evidence of supporting audit or similar
