Provide advanced and/or specialist diagnostic Plain Imaging Radiography, to all patients and users of the Radiology service of North Bristol NHS Trust, ensuring the delivery is professional and patient centred.

Main duties of the job
- Position patients with a high degree of accuracy (within 1 or 2 degrees/millimetres) to ensure high quality images and minimise patient radiation dose
- Be able to communicate to a broad range of individuals in a professional and caring manner including those whose first language is not English, or who may, for whatever reason, have difficulty understanding. These individuals include patients, visitors, clinical, technical and other staff.
- Build confidence and trust with patients, particularly children, in a potentially frightening, technical environment by applying a professional and empathetic approach
- Build and promote inter professional understanding and networks with peers and colleagues.
- Identify and resolve complex problems using agreed departmental procedures.
- Plan and prioritise workload for self and multi-disciplinary team within the Imaging department
- Keep accurate records and documentation.
- Comply with local procedures for IRMER Schedule 2 as an Operator
- Undertake, and lead team in more complex examinations requiring application of specialist expertise.
- Supervision and provide instruction in the safe and accurate Radiographic investigation of patients.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Promote an image of high professional skill and competence to all department users and to impress the public with attitudes and service provided by the Trust in general and by Radiographers in particular.
- Participate in the provision of Plain Imaging services at North Bristol NHS Trust. Contributing to the 24-hour, 7 day working week, with engagement with rota shift duties and on-call at all NBT hospital sites.
- Performing routine and complex unsupervised examinations relevant to appropriate level of training and experience (working in accordance with Imaging protocol)
- Provide X-Ray examinations within the Brunel Building, working in fixed X-Ray rooms or using mobile equipment outside the department (Surgical theatre with Image Intensifier, or wards with mobile X-Ray)
- Contribute to community working. Working independently at Yate and/or Clevedon, monitoring workload, liaising with reception staff, ISWs and Sirona MIU staff as appropriate. Report any disruption to Imaging services to Line manager at first instance and contact and record equipment concerns with manufacturer and in the equipment fault log.
- Fulfilling the Operator role in accordance with IRMER guidelines, and ensuring justification of Imaging requests (In accordance with authorisation guidelines)
- Working in accordance with Local Rules and principles of radiation safety
- Utilising interpretation services for patients as required.
- Engaging with safeguarding teams if there are any patient safety concerns.
- Liaising with Learning disability service as required
- Undertake equipment competency training on the full range of X-Ray radiographic equipment including diagnostic rooms, mobile X-Ray and Image Intensifier and 3D O arm.
- Undertake supervisory duties in combination with, or in absence of Superintendent Radiographer:
- Act as departmental senior person and point of contact at evening, nights, and weekends.
- Monitor departmental workload and apply contingency or remedial actions if necessary
- Communicate such contingency to Superintendent Radiographer or Lead Radiographer, or clinical site team and Emergency department (if appropriate) out of hours.
- Dependent on rota duties/ location:
- Monitor inpatient workload and organise timely imaging for this patient group. Working in co-ordination with portering teams and nursing staff on the ward.
- Collate theatre tasking and delegate workload to colleagues. Responding to radiographer’s bleep and phoning theatres to understand working demands. Communicating any staffing and subsequent theatre cover concerns to the theatre co-ordinator.
- Establish contact with outpatient clinics to understand patient demands and liaise with referrers in the event of issues relating to protocol or clinical questions or inconsistencies.
- Monitor workload from Emergency department minors and majors. Communicating any workload concerns back to the Lead nurse in ED.
- Supervise colleagues with guidance on correct radiographic positioning and patient manual handling.
- Distribute workload evenly to junior Radiographers and Assistant Practitioners.
- Report any concerns relating to time keeping, absenteeism, safety, lack of knowledge or any other concern relating to professional conduct by their colleagues to Superintendent or Lead Radiographer.
- Supervise access to equipment and controlled areas by service engineers. Complete equipment handover forms and ensure the equipment is cleaned and ready for inspection. Store handover form in medusa directory or supply to Superintendent Radiographer for filing.
- Supervise students.
- Ensuring they are acting professionally and safely within the department during their interactions with patients. Making sure they have engaged in supervision prior to commencement of any Imaging task.
- Be a student appraiser or be prepared to work towards this practice educator role.
- Sign off daily comments in student logbooks, and sign to evidence activities in their competency log books
- Assess and react to the needs and safety of patients at all times. Calling assistance from ward nursing staff, emergency department or clinical emergency team (as appropriate) in the event of a patient concern.
- Collaborate with Radiologists, and Reporting Radiologists to expedite the formal reporting of abnormal findings in radiographic images.
- Ensure any compliments and complaints from any source, are reported immediately to their Line Manager
- Supervise access of domestic staff to controlled areas.
- Adhere to the Trust and Departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines. These will include:
- Health and Safety
- Data protection
- Quality Assurance
- Infection Control
- Major Incidents,
- dress code,
- sickness absence and punctuality etc,
- Participate in Annual Appraisal reviews with a nominated appraiser.
- Undertake appraisals for junior staff or work towards being a staff appraiser via MLE training course.
- Participate in departmental audit that includes equipment Quality assurance, IRMER, Synbiotix, water flushing, etc.
- Instruct junior staff with regard to research protocols and how to access them
- Participate in mentoring and/or preceptorship activities for graduate Radiographers and new staff members.
- Report all incidents of injury to themselves or patients via the DATIX system and utilising the appropriate radiation incident forms as appropriate. Support junior colleagues and students with completion of such forms if required. Escalate such incidents to a line manger if required.
- Ensure the work area has been cleaned at the start and end of day as appropriate and records of departmental cleaning and water flushing logs have been completed.
- Comply with Departmental Ionising Radiation Local Rules and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations
