Job Overview

Are you looking to play a vital support role within a Pharmacy? As a Pharmacy Patient Services Porter, you’ll be an essential part of our pharmacy operations, ensuring smooth and efficient delivery of medicines and supplies. Your role will be key to maintaining an organised, clean, and safe environment, helping pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and support staff to focus on patient care.

This entry-level position is perfect for someone who is reliable, hardworking, and eager to contribute to a fast-paced healthcare setting. You’ll handle the transportation of medicines, stock management, and general porter duties, gaining valuable experience and insight into pharmacy operations.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the regular collection and delivery of pharmacy items to and from wards, in a timely manner.
  • Maintain good communication with the wards and pharmacy staff and that any queries from the wards are relayed accurately and without delay.
  • Responsible for the collection and delivery of items
  • Ensure that items for dispatch from the pharmacy are correctly packaged prior to delivery to the wards.
  • Ensure that all necessary signatures are obtained - including those for controlled drugs to maintain a clear audit trail.
  • Greet and deal with patients, hospital staff and visitors at the pharmacy reception or those calling by telephone in a courteous and understanding manner
  • Inform wards when medication is ready for collection when appropriate
  • Receive requests and hand out medication to members of hospital staff.
  • Ensure correct uniform is worn during working hours, including ID badges in case of being challenged by staff on wards/departments
  • Adhere to Information Governance at all times.
  • Take advantage of any training/development opportunity offered in connection with the post.
  • Provide training to other pharmacy porters, pharmacy assistants and other pharmacy staff when required.
  • Participate in the Trusts annual appraisal system designed to identify objectives and personal development opportunities.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

  • This post provides operational support to the pharmacy patient services team, pharmacy clinical team and pharmacy supply services team.
  • To undertake regular deliveries of medication, stock requests and prescriptions to and from Pharmacy / wards, departments and clinical areas in a timely manner.
  • Use the Pharmacy Tracking System to help with patient flow.
  • Support reception staff to include answering the telephone and taking enquiries
  • Carry out all duties in support of the Pharmacy Service in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures
  • Assist with other duties supporting the pharmacy service when required.

Person specification

Education / Training / Qualification

Essential criteria

  • Trained or willing to train towards NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy services

Desirable criteria

  • Expereince in portering / customer service
  • GCSE/ Equivalent in English or Maths
