Large Business (LB) is a directorate within Customer Compliance Group (CCG) in HMRC. LB is responsible for the tax affairs of the largest 2000 businesses in the UK, dealing with highly technical tax matters and complex global businesses and bringing in c.£11bn in compliance yield per annum.
In additional to showing technical leadership as an LB Advisory Accountant, you will be expected to lead on some of the national priorities of the LB Advisory Accountant team. This may include setting the strategic direction for your lead role, coordinating accountancy advice, and developing links with key stakeholders across LB, CCG and HMRC.
These lead roles may change from time to time (adapting to changes in LB priorities) but may include a lead role in an accountancy technical area, quality, pipeline, recruitment.

This is a rare opportunity for an external candidate to join HMRCs Advisory and Forensic Accountants Profession at a senior level. We are looking for an experienced technical accountant to join us. Equivalent roles in the private sector will include experienced Managers/Senior Managers in Big 4 Practice and Financial Controllers/Group Accountants in industry.


Responsibilities:


Provide accountancy advice to LB case teams which is objective, professional, clear and concise.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing to a variety of audiences.
Understand and be able to explain complex issues to both accountants and non-accountants in a simple and articulate way.
Analyse facts and assess information to show both understanding of the underlying nature of the transaction and the bigger picture.
Coordinate and provide strategic direction for your lead role(s).
Show resilience under pressure, persistent within professional bounds and confident enough to impart your views and accept constructive criticism.
Use digital skills for research, interpretation and analysis, with good computer literacy to support efficient working and learning.
Act as a senior advisor, utilising knowledge and experience to lead and influence using a variety of communication styles.
Build relationships with senior managers and strategic decision makers with confidence and credibility, across internal boundaries, Government departments and externally.
Develop staff through championing learning and development and building professional skills.?
Lead and motivate a diverse team to pro-actively deliver against objectives, providing support and broader context to their work.
Show technical leadership, acting pro-actively and fostering an environment of continuous improvement and risk based prioritisation.
Actively and visibly role model dynamic and inclusive leadership with energy and enthusiasm and inspire others to do the same.

Person specification

A clear and demonstrable depth of financial accounting experience gained and consolidated in either practice, industry, public sector or private sector, dealing with a range of stakeholders, and specifically including:
Commercial knowledge and an understanding of how large corporates operate including accounting systems.
Experience of analysing and interpreting a range of financial records.
Experience of preparing or reviewing financial statements.
Experience of considering the appropriate accounting treatment of a variety of specific transactions.
Experience in communicating orally and in writing with sufficient credibility to key stakeholders (including Big 4, multinational corporate groups, senior HMRC officers and tribunals).
Experience of leading across internal and external boundaries and empowering others to deliver.
It will be advantageous for a candidate to have experience in large corporates.

Full and complete qualification from, and continuing membership of, one of the following professional accounting bodies:

Qualifications The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)?
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS)?
Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI)?
The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)?
The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)?
The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA)?
