Research Administrator - Band 3 - Surgery Team

Are you looking for a new challenge in a team with a fast-developing portfolio of research?

We are advertising for an organised, enthusiastic and friendly administrator to join the Surgery Research Team.

The post will be part of a high-performing research team and will provide administrative, financial and invoice management support.

The successful candidate will be proactive, organised and will enjoy being part of a team that are striving to improve patient care through high quality research in Colorectal, Vascular and emergency surgery.

As part of this friendly team you will help us to deliver our portfolio of research/governance studies and contribute to improving the care for this group of patients.

This role will offer an opportunity to develop administrative and finance skills through supported, hands on experience but also ongoing training in finance management and research processes.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder must be competent in managing databases, excel spreadsheets and all microsoft programs. Training and support will be provided.

We are looking for someone with experienced administrative skills to support the research delivery teams and liaise with external organisations. Effective written and interpersonal communication is essential due to the nature of the role.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The post holder will have;

  • Excellent communication skills
  • A good working knowledge of the full range of Microsoft Office applications
  • Previous administrative experience including dealing members of the public, prioritising and organising work, including filing

They must be able to communicate effectively with all groups of staff and patients via telephone, email and face-to-face.

The Main Duties Of The Post Will Involve

  • Providing administrative support to the research teams as appropriate:
    • Entering data on to databases
    • Sending questionniares to patients
  • Collecting Patient Reported Outcome Measure Scores from patients
  • Administration of research study documentation.
  • Maintaining accurate study records on individual study databases and the Trust R&D database.
  • Providing support to the research team by:
    • Typing and amending documents
    • Photocopying, printing, sending emails as and when required
  • Using initiative to manage own workload independently, referring to Line Manager when difficulties are encountered
  • Promoting systems and excellent communication between research infrastructure team and external parties and ensure this is maintained by:
    • Attending team meetings to provide/receive feedback
    • Ensuring there is an effective system in place for passing on messages
  • Maintaining a safe and secure working environment for self, internal and external visitors
  • Handling personal, sensitive (commercially and otherwise), confidential information.

Education/Training/Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • BSc in Science, Social science, Research, or equivalent experience

Desirable criteria

  • NVQ Business Administration level 3 or equivalent experience

Work Experience

Essential criteria

  • Previous administrative experience including use of databases
  • Experience of working within an administrative role adhering to protocols and procedures
  • Experience of working effectively as part of a team

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working in the NHS
  • Experience or knowledge of working in Clinical Research
  • Experience of working within Colorectal, Vascular, Theatres

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria

  • A good working knowledge of the full range of Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel, Teams etc.)
  • Knowledge of a range of administrative procedures (minute taking, diary management, arrangement of meetings etc)
  • Able to organise own work with the minimal of supervision
  • Demonstrates excellent written, verbal and electronic and communication skills
  • Ability to produce reports and adhere to deadlines

Desirable criteria

  • Experience undertaking costings for projects
