Job Overview

Applications are invited for a one year Clinical Training Fellowship in Epilepsy neurology. North Bristol Trust is a Teaching Trust linked with the University of Bristol. Full registration with the GMC is required. Candidates must have experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices, or equivalent.

This post is intended to provide the post-holder with specialist knowledge and skills in the field of epilepsy and epilepsy surgery assessment and will be suitable for a neurology trainee or a post-CCT neurologist with interest in epilepsy and epilepsy surgery. The post will provide a wide experience in epilepsy from the diagnosis of first seizure to the management of complex epilepsy including pharmacological treatment, EEG reporting, epilepsy surgery assessment, interpretation of scalp videotelemetry and intracranial stereo EEG recordings and neuromodulation procedures in epilepsy, such as vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS). The post will involve a combination of outpatient and in-patient work with some time available for research, audit and service improvement activities. The post holder may be able to contribute to the on-call neurology rotation pending previous background/ experience and service needs. The post may be prospectively approved for training.

We provide specialist neurological and stroke care to patients from Bristol and throughout the South West peninsula and South Wales. In addition to acute stroke and general neurology services the department provides high level sub-speciality care in areas including Multiple Sclerosis and Neuro-inflammatory disorders, Peripheral Nerve Disease, Neuro-ophthalmology, Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, Cognitive disorders, Neuromuscular diseases and neurovascular disorders.

Basic qualification

Essential criteria

  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • GMC registration
  • ALS up to date

Desirable criteria

  • Prizes
  • MRCP

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Completed pre-registration year (or equivalent outside UK).
  • Recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems & practices (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 2 years experience as SHO (or equivalent).

Desirable criteria

  • 4 months experience as SHO in neurology/stroke

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria

  • Competent in history taking and examination skills.

Desirable criteria

  • Experience reading EEGs

Communication / personal skill

Essential criteria

  • Able to communicate effectively with patients and their relatives.
  • Able to establish good working relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team

Research / Publications

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrate interest in research

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of contribution to published research

Clinical Audit

Essential criteria

  • Participated in an audit or quality improvement project
